The relationship between the Iowa Women’s Wrestling Club (IWWC), WrestleTown, USA, and the Ukrainian wrestling community continues to grow stronger.

This week, IWWC Board President Josh Schamberger is being hosted by the Ukrainian Wrestling Federation during the organization’s Senior National Championships. The invitation came directly from Ukrainian Wrestling Federation leadership following years of collaboration between the two wrestling communities.

The connection began in December 2022 when the Ukrainian Women’s National Team traveled to Coralville, Iowa, and captured the UWW Women’s World Cup championship. Since that historic visit, the team has returned to WrestleTown, USA multiple times at the invitation of the Iowa Women’s Wrestling Club and University of Iowa Head Women’s Wrestling Coach Clarissa Chun, participating in training camps alongside the Iowa women’s program and USA Wrestling athletes.

Schamberger’s visit to Ukraine serves as a powerful reminder of the bonds that have been built through wrestling.

“I have been treated like a king since the moment we crossed the border,” Schamberger said. “They have taken care of everything and no detail has gone unplanned for my visit. The coaches and athletes are incredibly touched that I accepted this invitation and deeply appreciate all of the support that continues to come from WrestleTown, USA.”

During the championships, Iowa City and the State of Iowa are being recognized and honored for their ongoing support of Ukrainian wrestling. Federation leaders and representatives from all 26 regions of Ukraine have acknowledged the unique relationship that has developed between their athletes and the wrestling community in Iowa.

“It’s a little overwhelming and emotional with everything this country is facing,” Schamberger said.

Across Ukraine, communities continue to honor those who have lost their lives defending their country. Schamberger noted that nearly every city features tributes to fallen citizens. That reality has been impossible to ignore throughout the visit.

“It brings things into perspective pretty quickly,” Schamberger reflected.

While wrestling has connected Iowa and Ukraine through competition and training, the relationship has evolved into something much deeper. Through camps and international cooperation, the Iowa Women’s Wrestling Club and WrestleTown, USA have demonstrated how sport can build lasting friendships that transcend borders.
